Routes to bike from Gavorrano to the bandits of scarlino

The Bandite di Scarlino is an impressive 8700-hectare forest complex south of Follonica and extends between the municipalities of Castiglione della Pescaia, Follonica, Gavorrano, and Scarlino.

Within this Nature Park can be found an extensive trail network frequented by many bikers in the area. The possible routes are all marked and have 3 different types of terrain: forest roads and mule tracks, trails, and firebreaks.

Starting from Gavorrano there is a route that leads to the Bandite di Scarlino, is preferably done by MTB and is considered moderately challenging. This route covers about 20 km outward and as much return, detours aside.

The total elevation gain is approximately 500 m and, therefore, can be challenging especially on the climbs, but this should not deter an experienced cyclist who can reasonably complete the outward journey in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. This is without considering the stops and detours to discover and admire the natural beauty of the Bandite di Scarlino or the beautiful villages along the way; the complete round trip should take 3 to 4 hours.

The intermediate steps are as follows:

  • Roccatederighi: charming medieval village perched on characteristic volcanic stone blocks and surrounded by a mighty city wall. Located in a commanding position with a panoramic view from the ancient fortress to the sea and the islands of Giglio and Elba.
  • Giuncarico: A small hillside hamlet built presumably in the early medieval period, the circular-shaped historic center is enclosed by medieval walls.

  • Caldana small village located in the hilly hinterland incredibly rich in architectural gems . Until 1970, a soft red, almost pink brecciated marble was extracted in the Portasanta Fallani Quarry.
